WHAT IS AN ENDODONTIST?

Dental Tissue Specialists

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

While every endodontist is a dentist, not many dentists are endodontists. In fact, only 3% of dentists are endodontists, according to the American Association of Endodontists. These specialists are experts in saving your natural teeth—they treat issues of the pulp and the tooth’s surrounding tissues.

What Are Endodontists’ Qualifications?

Endodontists are uniquely qualified to perform root canals and treat issues of the tooth pulp and tissues. In addition to dental school, these specialists undergo an extra two or three years of specialized training. They perform procedures utilizing the latest technologies and techniques in the field and must possess meticulous attention to detail and hand-eye coordination.

What Do Endodontists Treat?

Endodontists like Dr. Johnson treat issues of the tooth pulp and its tissues. These specialists aim to save your natural tooth, even when that requires complex care. Root canal therapy is the most common treatment that endodontists use. They also see patients with chronic tooth pain to diagnose the cause.

Why Choose An Endodontist?

There are many advantages to visiting an endodontist. While all dentists are qualified to perform root canals, endodontists are the ideal candidates for the procedure. Not only do they typically perform several root canals a day, but they also receive special training. If you are experiencing tooth pain or hoping to save a diseased tooth, you may consider making an appointment with Dr. Johnson at Dahlgren Dental. Some benefits include:

In addition to receiving his DDS from West Virginia University, Dr. Gary Johnson completed his endodontic residency at Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery in New York City.

Dr. Johnson is an award-winning endodontist with over 30 years of experience practicing in Northern Virginia. Prior to his residency, Dr. Johnson worked in general dentistry for seven years.

Most dentists perform an average of 2 root canals a week. An endodontist, on the other hand, completes about 25 root canal treatments per week, according to the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine.

These experts use the latest advancements, including specialized technology and surgical techniques, to provide high-quality care that can ultimately help patients save their natural teeth.
