Restoring Function And Beauty To Your Smile

RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

Restorative dentistry refers to any dental procedures done to restore form and function after tooth decay, injury, infection or neglect. Restorations such as fillings, bridges, and crowns can improve your overall quality of life and make biting, chewing and speaking easier. They help you keep your teeth. At Dahlgren Dental, our team can help you determine which restorative dentistry treatment option is right for you.

Fillings

If you are suffering from tooth decay, fillings may be right for you. The filling is a restoration used to make the lost part of a tooth re-contiguous with the surrounding area. Many different materials can be used to fill a cavity depending on your preference, location, and type of tooth.

Traditional fillings are often made of silver amalgam. This material is durable and can withstand the force of chewing and biting, and are especially useful for teeth located in the back of the mouth.

As opposed to silver amalgam, newer fillings resemble the appearance of natural teeth, and are made of ceramic and plastic compounds. While these can sometimes be used for the back teeth if tooth decay is minimal, there are more frequently used in the front teeth. The composite material typically lasts longer than other types, is less likely to cause sensitivity, and is the most aesthetic because it mimics enamel.

Crowns

Crowns are a restorative procedure used to improve your tooth’s shape or to strengthen a tooth for broken, worn or partially decayed teeth. Crowns are made of metal or porcelain materials, and are cemented on an existing tooth like a cap. Once a crown is installed, it acts like the tooth’s new outer surface above the gum line. While both metal and porcelain crowns are great options, many patients prefer porcelain, as they are more discreet.  A patient is a good candidate for crowns or onlays (partial crowns) if their tooth cannot support a filling.

Bridges

Bridges have many uses—they can replace missing teeth, restore the functionality of your smile, more evenly distribute pressure among the teeth and give the face a symmetrical appearance. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap left by the lost tooth. The crowns are usually made from porcelain or metal and can be created with a metallic post cemented for support before being placed in the mouth.

Bridges are usually made to match adjacent teeth in color and shape, so they blend seamlessly. The bridge itself may be cemented in place or attached to surrounding teeth using metal clasps. How successful this treatment option depends on how strong your existing bone and gums are—the stronger the foundation, the better the results.

Dentures

Dentures are used to replace teeth that have been lost due to injury, disease or age. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), more than 22 million full and partial dentures are manufactured each year in the United States. This number is split almost equally among full and partial dentures. Full dentures replace all of the natural teeth, while partial dentures only replace part of them.

Dentures are made in a dental laboratory by skilled technicians. They are fabricated from impressions (molds) that are made of the patient’s mouth and then sent to a dental laboratory for construction. They can be made from plastic resins or porcelain combined with metal alloys or another type of base material.

Dentures are natural-looking replacement teeth that are removable. The two types of dentures that we offer at Dahlgren Dental are full and partial. If a patient has lost their natural teeth, full dentures may be required. In contrast, if a patient still has some natural teeth, a partial denture may be attached to a metal frame on the existing teeth to cover where teeth are missing.

Partial Dentures

There are two types of partial dentures – complete and cemented. A complete partial denture is held in place by natural teeth. These partial dentures sit between the patient’s remaining teeth and are held in place with clasps that secure them around the surrounding natural tooth. A cemented partial denture is attached to a metal framework and cemented directly onto dental implants.

Full Dentures

Full dentures are used when all of the teeth on your upper or lower arch need to be replaced. They are removable appliances that provide support for facial tissues and enable people to speak, chew, and perform other functions of daily life more easily. If necessary, any remaining natural teeth must be removed from the jawbone where they were located before the dentures can be fabricated.
