How Sedatives Are Administered
- Inhalation – Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the most common form of sedation. Laughing gas is a good choice for those with mild to moderate dental anxiety. During your treatment, the dentist places a mask over your mouth. Breathing in the Nitrous oxide from the mask will help you to feel relaxed, though you will still be awake. Another benefit of the gas is that the effects dissipate quickly once the mask is removed.
- Oral – Another common form of sedation is oral sedation for those with mild to moderate dental phobia. Oral sedation is easy and painless. you will be given a prescription pill, which you will need to take an hour or two before your appointment, per your dentist’s instructions. By the time of your appointment, the effects of the pill will take effect, helping you feel relaxed and a bit sleepy.
