Chipped or Fractured Teeth
Chipped teeth account for the majority of dental emergencies. Chips can usually be fixed by reattaching the broken piece or by placing a tooth-colored filling. If a significant portion of the tooth is broken off, an artificial crown may be needed to restore the tooth. If cracks extend into the root of a tooth, a root canal, and a full-coverage crown may be needed to restore function to the tooth or the tooth may require extraction.
Dislodged Teeth
Sometimes a tooth may be pushed sideways out of its socket. The dentist can often reposition and stabilize your tooth. Root canal treatment is usually needed for adults whose permanent teeth have been dislodged and should be started a few days following the injury.
Knocked-Out Teeth
Perhaps one of the scariest feelings is when a tooth is knocked out of the mouth. Don’t panic! Handle the tooth gently and quickly and carefully rinse it in water. Do not brush or attempt to clean the tooth in any other way. The less time a tooth is out of its socket, the better chance there is that your dentist can save it. If the affected tooth is a baby tooth, you should not attempt to save it. If we think the tooth can be saved, our same day emergency dentist in King George, VA will place a stabilizing splint on the tooth for several weeks. A tooth canal may be necessary, based on the condition of the roots.
Traumatic Dental Injuries in Children
Chipped baby teeth can be aesthetically restored and, in rare cases, dislodged baby teeth can be repaired. Attempting to save knocked-out baby teeth, however, should be avoided. Replanted baby teeth can cause severe damage to permanent teeth. Our emergency pediatric dentist in King George, VA will carefully monitor permanent teeth affected by dental trauma to ensure that the teeth continue to grow as they should.
